Hawes Radio Relay Facility

What you were looking at that night was in fact an almost ordinary radio tower. This tower was out of the ordinary in that it contained an elevator, broadcast at a frequency your car radio couldn't pick up, and had (for part of its life, anyway), flashing hazard lights on its guy wires as well as the tower itself. Oh...it also happened to be 1,226 feet tall!

Now, we realize that folks in the eastern U.S. probably won't find that last fact particularly impressive, as giant commercial broadcast towers are quite common there. We even have a few in northern California. But for the most part they're as rare as a drug-free rock star "out west" here, with the height of most radio towers in the Mojave being on the order of around 250 feet. So with that fact in mind, take a look...
